Peru: Global Dominance in Table Grape Exports, with the United States as It’s Key Market

Peru: Global Dominance in Table Grape Exports, with the United States as It’s Key Market

In the 2022-2023 season, Peru reinforced its status as the world's leading exporter of table grapes, achieving a remarkable feat with 586,000 MT in volume and a substantial FOB value of US$1.5 billions. Notably, in the preceding season (2021-2022), Peru had already secured the top position in terms of monetary value. The recent prosperity in Peru's table grape production can be traced back to a strategic varietal replacement initiated seven years ago, according to PROVID. Currently, 70% of Peru's cultivated areas feature licensed or patented varieties renowned for superior quality and yields.

A Diverse Array of Varietals

Peru boasts a diverse portfolio, producing and exporting over 53 varieties of table grapes, with the top 10 —Sweet Globe, Red Globe, Autum Crisp, Allison, Sweet Celebration, Crimson, Ivory, Timpson, Jack’s Salute, and Superior— constituting 85% of the nation's global table grape exports. Among these, white or green seedless varieties dominate, making up 49% of shipments. Red seedless varieties follow with a 27% share, while Red Globe grapes account for 20%. Black seedless varieties constitute the remaining 4% of Peruvian table grape shipments.

U.S. Market Leadership

In the 2022-2023 season, the U.S. market witnessed a substantial 22% growth in shipments compared to the previous season, solidifying its position as the primary destination for Peruvian table grapes, encompassing 46% of total shipments. American consumers exhibit a strong preference for white seedless grapes, and Peru has made significant investments to meet this demand, resulting in these grapes now comprising 50% of Peruvian table grape shipments to the U.S. Red seedless grapes, the prior market leader, now hold a significant 41% share, while black seedless grapes and Red Globe grapes together account for less than 10% of shipments to the U.S.

It is noteworthy that during the 2022-2023 season, 85% of Peru's table grape supply to the United States found its way to the East Coast, with only 15% directed to the West Coast. This seasonal trend, spanning from August 2022 to April 2023, deviated from the harvesting season in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Intricacies of the El Niño Phenomenon

In 2023, the Peruvian coast witnessed a substantial temperature surge, reaching 4 to 5 °C above the historical averages of the last 25 years. This shift, attributed to the Coastal El Niño Phenomenon, coupled with intense rains in the northern region of Peru in March and April due to Cyclone Yaku, directly impacted the phenological cycle of the grape crop. These changes accelerated processes, resulting in an early start to the 2023-2024 season.

Moreover, the altered climatic conditions have significantly impacted the productive zones in the northern region, which contributed significantly to Peru's export volume growth. While the most pronounced drop in yields per hectare is mainly seen in traditional varieties, the notable effect in the northern region makes forecasting new growth in the upcoming campaign challenging. This uncertainty marks a deviation from the consistent growth observed in previous seasons.
