Peru's Robust Blueberry Supply to the US: Quality Assurance Amidst El Niño Challenges

Peru's Robust Blueberry Supply to the US: Quality Assurance Amidst El Niño Challenges

Peru boasts an impressive array of 70 distinct blueberry varieties, promising a secure and continually improving quality supply to the United States. Despite the threat posed by the El Niño Phenomenon, Peru is committed to providing the US with blueberries known for their size, flavor, and firmness. The South American country has strategically planted these fruits in several regions to ensure productivity and diversity.

Peru's growth in the blueberry industry, including organic and conventional options, solidifies its position as the world's primary blueberry exporter. Once the El Niño Phenomenon subsides, Peru's blueberry exports are expected to continue with a higher standard of quality.

El Niño Phenomenon

The El Niño Phenomenon, characterized by a temperature rise of 4°C to 5°C above the 25-year average, has impacted and delayed the harvest of some blueberry varieties. This has led to a delay in the blueberry campaign, shifting from September to mid-November.

This delay resulted in a reduction in fresh blueberry exports to the United States during the current campaign, which began in May. Only 14,356 tons have been exported so far, representing half of the previous year's levels up to August. An analysis of the months between May and July shows a nearly 20% decrease in fresh blueberry exports compared to the previous campaign. It is expected that this drop will expand to 40% less between August and October, compared to the 2022-23 campaign.

There is hope for a recovery in export volumes during the final stage of the campaign, from November to January, depending on the climate evolution during this period. Uncertainty remains regarding the intensity and duration of the El Niño Phenomenon in the southern hemisphere's summer months.

Future Landscape

Looking ahead, a short term reduction in volume is anticipated, but the United States can count on a secure supply from Peruvian exporters. The forthcoming campaign benefits from an extensive supply from various regions in Peru, featuring diverse blueberry varieties celebrated for their quality.
